The crossover
Four dollars more than five units.
Five rack units in a shared rack cost $745 a month. A quarter rack costs $749. Both numbers are published on this site, so the comparison is something you can check rather than a claim you have to take on trust.
Five units, shared rack
5U of lockable space inside a cabinet shared with other clients, on a 5 amp circuit. No physical separation from other tenants.
Quarter rack
10U in an enclosure only your team can open, on a 20 amp circuit. Double the space, four times the power, sole occupancy.
Four dollars a month is the entire difference. Most providers at 151 Front Street West publish no price at all, so there is nothing to compare them against.
Capacity
What fits in 10U.
Ten rack units holds a small production estate with room left to grow. Plan the power alongside the space: a 20 amp 110V circuit is loaded to 80 percent, so budget roughly 1.7 kW of usable draw rather than the nameplate figure.
Two to three hosts
2U servers, the usual shape of a small virtualization cluster or a web and database pair.
One to two U of switching
A top-of-rack switch, and a second if you want redundant uplinks.
One to two U of firewall
A single appliance, or a pair if you run them active and passive.
Leave headroom
Filling all 10U on day one leaves nowhere for growth and makes every later change harder.

FAQ
Common questions about quarter rack colocation.
Sizing and price
When should I move from per-U to a quarter rack?
At 5U. Five units in a shared rack cost $745 a month and a quarter rack costs $749, so the moment you need a fifth unit you are paying quarter rack money for half the space and a quarter of the power. At 3U or 4U with no growth planned, per-U is still the cheaper option.
How many servers fit in 10U?
Two or three 2U hosts plus a switch and a firewall is a comfortable quarter rack. Five 1U servers plus networking also fits. In practice the limit is power rather than space: the included 20 amp 110V circuit is loaded to 80 percent, which gives roughly 1.7 kW of usable draw.
Is a quarter rack better value than two or three more units in a shared rack?
Above 4U, yes. Shared rack space is $149 per unit per month, so 6U would cost $894, more than a quarter rack at $749 for 10U. The crossover sits at the fifth unit.
Power and access
Do I get more power than a 5U shared rack customer?
Substantially more. A 5U shared rack includes 5 amps at 110V. A quarter rack includes 20 amps at 110V, four times the circuit, for four dollars more a month. If you need more than that, additional and higher-capacity circuits, 208V and three-phase are available.
Is a quarter rack actually locked, or just allocated space in a shared cabinet?
Locked. A quarter rack is a dedicated enclosure holding only your equipment, with a unique access code known only to your authorised team. That is the difference between private and shared rack: in a shared rack your hardware sits in an open cabinet alongside other clients, with no physical separation.
