No Fiber, No Problem: How ETRdotTV Uses Amanah to Connect Harbourfront and Toronto Island

See how ETRdotTV used Amanah's dedicated servers at 151 Front to build a working internet network on Toronto Island park.

“We would not have been able to create our business without Amanah.” – Ron Shaw, Proprietor, ETRdotTV

The Company

ETRdotTV is a Toronto-based media and connectivity company. Their ThunderWAN service delivers fixed wireless internet to Toronto’s waterfront and Toronto Island park – where there is still no fiber connection. Running a connectivity business in that environment means their infrastructure must support custom configurations, scale flexibly with the business, and have reliable uptime.

The Setup: Fixed Wireless Internet Where Cable Doesn’t Reach

Toronto Island park and its surrounding marinas currently have no fiber infrastructure. The only available option is DSL, which is insufficient for the high-bandwidth connection that ETRdotTV wants to provide. In turn, ETRdotTV built a solution through Amanah’s servers at 151 Front Street West. ETRdotTV’s ThunderWAN runs a wireless link from 151 Front out to the Island, delivering internet access to the Toronto Island Marina, Island Yacht Club, water taxi companies, and waterfront businesses along Queens Quay. A network controller and RADIUS authentication server controls the operations – provisioning users, authenticating every login, and managing the entire subscriber base. Amanah powers the infrastructure that keeps ETRdotTV’s services running.

What Amanah Has Provided

ETRdotTV has used a range of Amanah services since 2016: colocation, dedicated servers, IP transit, remote hands, and cross-connects. When ETRdotTV was growing the ThunderWAN operation, their workload required a quarter rack with multiple on-prem 1Gbps connections. Then, the building they were operating from was closed and staged for construction – forcing ETRdotTV to scale back their requirements. Amanah accommodated that change without friction. ETRdotTV has large plans in the works. When workloads grow and it’s time to expand again, the same ease of scalability applies.

Performance and Reliability

Being a small provider means that we don’t have the clout that a big telecom has. Amanah treats us as an equal, yet has the depth to deliver what we need. – Ron Shaw, Proprietor, ETRdotTV
Amanah’s BGP multi-homing across many providers means there’s always an efficient path available. That upstream stability is what ETRdotTV’s downstream service runs on. In the case of an emergency, ETRdotTV was able to reach Amanah leadership and the technical team quickly – every time. When asked what’s one thing about the setup process that they liked, Ron answered: “Being able to have the ear of the Amanah owner.”

The Outcome

In their words
“Value pricing, service quality, performance, and a close relationship – Amanah checks all the boxes.” – Ron Shaw, Proprietor, ETRdotTV
ETRdotTV has been an active Amanah client for more than nine years. When asked to sum up their experience, they were straightforward: “[We are] … happy to stay as a customer and expand the business relationship moving forward.”

The Facility

Amanah operates out of 151 Front Street West, one of the most connected buildings in Canada. Our facility is carrier-neutral, with access to 400+ networks and direct TorIX peering. Hosting workloads from this building gives clients access to more carriers, more routing options, and lower latency. 151 Front runs on N+1 UPS redundancy with on-site generator backup, precision cooling, and BGP multi-homing across tier-1 carriers for network redundancy. Built-in DDoS protection keeps traffic clean, and Amanah’s office is just steps from the data center. More than that, Amanah is fully Canadian-owned and operated. Flexibility is important to us – so all our colocation contracts are one-year terms. We also offer completely free consultations with our IT experts – with no commitment required.

Amanah À La Carte

ETRdotTV’s highly custom setup shows how infrastructure must be configured to business needs – not a pre-determined bundle. Amanah À La Carte (ALC) is built for that level of flexibility. ALC lets you combine multiple services – such as renting servers, colocation, and server management – under a single invoice. No more tracking multiple vendors or locking into long-term contracts. ALC puts it all in one place, in the way that works for you. Amanah’s ALC options are completely customized stacks, ensuring you only pay for what you need.

Questions about this topic

What is the difference between colocation and a dedicated server?

With colocation, you own the hardware and rent space, power, and connectivity inside the data center. With a dedicated server, Amanah owns the hardware and you rent it. Both give you a single-tenant environment – your workloads run on hardware that isn’t shared with other clients. The right choice depends on whether you want to own your equipment or keep capital costs out of the equation. Amanah À La Carte (ALC) also lets you combine both into a single customized stack if your workload calls for it.

What is Amanah À La Carte (ALC)?

Amanah À La Carte is a flexible infrastructure option that lets you build a customized stack by combining colocation, dedicated servers, IP transit, remote hands, cross-connects, and other services – paying for what you use rather than fitting into a
standard package. It’s designed for businesses whose infrastructure requirements don’t map
cleanly to a single product tier.

Can I scale my infrastructure up or down with Amanah?

Yes. ETRdotTV has moved between a single server and a quarter rack depending on where the business was at, including scaling back after losing a physical location, and will scale back up when workloads require it. Amanah adjusts without requiring a new contract or a protracted process.

Why do businesses choose dedicated server hosting in Toronto over cloud?

For workloads that run consistently – authentication servers, network controllers, application backends, managed services – a dedicated server in Toronto delivers predictable performance at a predictable monthly cost, without the egress fees and variable billing that compound on cloud. You also get full control over your configuration and operating system, Canadian data residency, and direct access to a local support team. What makes 151 Front Street West the right location for dedicated server hosting?

What makes 151 Front Street West the right location for dedicated server hosting?

151 Front Street West is Canada’s most connected carrier hotel, with access to 400+ networks and direct TorIX peering. Hosting at 151 Front means low-latency routing to major Canadian and North American networks, BGP multi-homing across tier-1 carriers for built-in redundancy, and direct cross-connects to cloud providers and ISPs. For businesses that depend on network performance – like ETRdotTV’s fixed wireless operation – it’s the strongest anchor point in the country.

Does Amanah support non-standard or custom infrastructure setups?

Yes. ETRdotTV’s setup – a dedicated server running network management and authentication for a fixed wireless service, with roof access, cross-connects, and IP transit – required a provider willing to work through a configuration that doesn’t fit a standard package. Amanah worked through it and has
continued to support the setup as it’s evolved. Custom requirements are handled as a normal
part of how Amanah works, not as exceptions.

How does Amanah handle support for clients who aren't large enterprise accounts?

The same way it handles everyone else. ETRdotTV has been a client since 2016 and runs a single
dedicated server. Direct access to Amanah leadership and technicians hasn’t changed based on account size – every client reaches the same team.
